This article in the Financial Review – Inside Australia’s Most Invasive Data Hack - provides a detailed timeline of the hack, noting the concerning reality ‘There is no sense the crisis is over’.

Australians are being warned to expect a growing wave of Russian cyberattacks that hold more companies to ransom and spread concern among customers in a trend linked to state support for criminal gangs.

Healthcare industry main target

The healthcare industry continues to be main target of data breaches, with 79 notifiable data breaches reported in six months.

Most data breaches were caused by what the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) calls "malicious or criminal attacks" — 31 per cent from ransomware, followed by phishing, when someone sends an email or text designed to trick the recipient into sharing passwords or other details.

Improve your IT Security Posture

At Digit IT we recommend a four-pronged approach to IT Security:

  1. IT Security Audit - Determine the current state of your IT security and receive recommendations on how to rectify critical vulnerabilities.

  2. Managed IT Security - Let Digit IT tailor a Managed IT Security Plan for your business, based on your risk assessment, budget and compliance requirements.

  3. IT Security Training - Educate staff about cyber security risks and enhance user awareness.

  4. Security Monitoring - Sleep soundly at night, with 24x7 network monitoring.

Digit IT also provide emergency response and disaster recovery services in the event of a cyber security attack.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) also offers great information for Board Members, CEO’s and General Managers who are looking to improve their knowledge of cyber security.

ACSC has developed prioritised mitigation strategies, in the form of the Strategies to Mitigate Cyber Security Incidents, to help organisations protect themselves against various cyber threats. The most effective of these mitigation strategies are the Essential Eight and we recommend businesses implement these recommendations using a risk-based approach. It is worth nothing that Essential Eight compliance is also fast becoming a mandatory requirement for many tenders, contracts and cyber security policies.
